COURSE DESCRIPTION
What was happening in Canada as Europe’s Jews were being swallowed by the Nazi juggernaut? How did Jews in Canada react to the news of genocide? What did the Canadian government do during and after the war for Jewish refugees? This four-session course will introduce you to the actions and inactions of Canadians during the Holocaust as well as the reception of survivors after the war’s end.

COURSE INSTRUCTOR
Steven Lapidus
Steven Lapidus is a Montreal-based scholar of the history of Orthodox Judaism, with a focus on the North American manifestation of Haredi Judaism. A former co-curator at the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre, he has published articles and book chapters in both English and French on Canadian Jewish history and the Hasidic experience in North America. He has taught courses in western religions, sexuality and religion, Jewish history and culture at Concordia University, where he received his doctorate, as well as at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and McGill University.
All course details, including Zoom links for all class sessions, will be emailed to registered students one week prior to the first class. This class will be conducted in English.
