About the ACJS
The Association for Canadian Jewish Studies promotes awareness and knowledge of the varieties of Jewish life in Canada across all demographics, denominational affiliations, and political lines. Through sharp and deeply informed scholarship and writing, data-driven social science research, digital public humanities initiatives, podcasts, adult education offerings, and more, the ACJS’s goal is to inspire excitement and enthusiasm for all things Jewish Canada.
Our History
Founded in 1976 as the Canadian Jewish Historical Society, the organization’s original aim was to promote and disseminate historical research concerning the relationship of Jews to Canadian society. In 1996, the society changed its name to the Association for Canadian Jewish Studies, a visionary move that reflected a keen awareness of the expanding disciplinary scope of scholars studying Canadian Jewry, not to mention the desire to renew the field for a rising generation of students and researchers working in both English and French.
Over the years, the ACJS established itself as the national engine of academic inquiry into Canadian Jewish life, primarily through its annual conference and multidisciplinary scholarly journal, Canadian Jewish Studies / Études juives canadiennes. As the organization has evolved in recent years, it has retained its core commitments to amplifying new scholarship, increasing exposure to the study of Canadian Jewry, supporting individuals working in the field today, enriching campus life for students, and creating opportunities for future generations to study and learn about Canada’s Jewish community.
